Up and Down
Last night I watched a Czech movie called Up and Down. It wasn't bad. It starts off with these two guys smuggling people across the Czech border in a semi, and a baby gets left in the back. The movie follows some seemingly unrelated characters (such as the woman who buys the baby in a pawn shop) whose lives all intertwine. There ended up being a lot of racial overtones, but I'm not completely sure how much was intended as a theme of the movie, or if it's more just reflective of the culture (my guess would be the former). The movie wasn't as funny as the jacket made it out to be, but there were some very funny moments, such as two theives deciding to rob what they think are Chinese tourists, but the guy is in the country giving interviews about how he escaped from a prison camp and survived several months in the jungle before opening up a martial arts studio.
I'm really in the mood to see Spellbound again, after catching part of the national bee on ESPN2 a couple of weeks ago, so of course my local Blockbuster doesn't have a copy.
